At Paonia’s Paradise Theater

If you’re beginning to feel the winter blues, don’t fret just yet. The Cabin Fever Series at the Paradise Theater begins in January and will surely brighten the dreariest of moods! This program is a great option for those who are feeling a bit isolated this winter, as well as for those who revel in a good flick every now and then.  And here’s a holiday tip: a pass to the series makes a great gift for the cinephile in your life. A pair of passes could be even better, turning your movie into a night on the town.

logoFormer theater manager, Danny Perkins started Cabin Fever nearly twenty-five years ago at the Paradise Theater, sharing his love of foreign and independent films with the community. His passion for excellent film caught on quickly, and people still look forward to it today. The Paradise Theater’s current artistic director and fellow movie buff, Amy DeLuca now champions the film festival.  Cabin Fever has even inspired her to begin a new Documentary Film Series all about music and art.  These documentaries will be shown monthly in support of other North Fork Valley music and art organizations.  Check it out!

Throughout the year, DeLuca works and volunteers at film festivals not only for personal enjoyment, but with the intention of seeking the worthiest films for Cabin Fever. This year she has carefully selected six extraordinary films from around the world ranging from documentaries to thrillers. Each film is introduced to the audience, providing a bit of detail and history that creates a viewing experience unlike any you’d find at a big box theatre. Cabin Fever attendees also often linger after the film has ended to talk about what they thought; a true movie lovers crowd.

Trip to Italy

The first picture to kick off the series, on January 9th,  is the British film, Trip to Italy. It’s the second season to its prequel, The Trip. Renowned comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon star in this thoughtful, dramatic comedy, exploring and dining across the beautiful Italian countryside.

Rich Hill is the second film that can be viewed in the Cabin Fever series. The documentary takes an intimate look at the lives of three boys, growing up in a poor town in the Midwest, and what their families mean to them. This film won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize, and received “Best Documentary Feature” at the Kansas Film Fest.

The third film on the list is The Blue Room or La Chambre Bleue. It’s a French film that falls under the crime/thriller genre. The Blue Room is sexy, mysterious and will keep you on the edge of your seat!

Rosewater

Rosewater

Jon Stewart makes his directorial debut with his new film Rosewater, which you can catch during the Cabin Fever series. It follows the true story of Iranian-Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari. Bahari was detained in Iran after covering political unrest for the BBC, and was tortured and interrogated for 118 days. Rosewater is based off the best-selling book “Then They Came for Me.”

Changing gears, the next film in the series is God Help The Girl, a coming of age story about kids, rock bands, and the inevitable confusing relationships. The indie-pop musical is the creation of Stuart Murdoch, the lead singer for Belle & Sebastian, and is set in Glasglow’s West End. Mods and rockers galore.

Whiplash

Whiplash

Finishing the series with a bang, the intense Whiplash takes an unflinching look at the pursuit of greatness. A talented young jazz drummer is mentored by a teacher who will settle for nothing but the best, even if it means their sanity. Whiplash won the Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award for Best Drama.

So whether you’re needing to get unstuck from a rut this winter, or just out and about no matter the season, drop by the Paradise Theater to cozy up with some of the best international films out there.

You can catch two movies per month for just 10 bucks a show. Even better, you can grab a series ‘Gold Pass’ for just $50 to see all six films! See you there!
